Cascadia Yulegrass Returns!
Acoustic holiday bluegrass returns to the Pacific Northwest, December 3-5, with the 2nd annual Cascadia Yulegrass celebration. Featuring world-renowned musicians and regional favorites including Darol Anger, Sharon Gilchrist, Scott Law and introducing Samson Grisman, son of mandolin legend David Grisman, Cascadia Yulegrass is a contemporary, family-friendly, and affordable holiday alternative that doesn’t involve cracked nuts or ballerinas.
World-renowned fiddle master Darol Anger will direct and perform. Exceptional among modern fiddlers for his versatility and depth, Anger has driven the evolution of the contemporary string band through his involvement with numerous path-breaking ensembles such as the Turtle Island String Quartet, the David Grisman Quintet, and his Republic of Strings. Today Darol can be heard on NPR’s “Car Talk” theme song along with Earl Scruggs, David Grisman and Tony Rice, and is a featured soloist on dozens of recordings and motion picture soundtracks. For Cascadia Yulegrass, Anger is joined by Rowan/Rice mandolin-player Sharon Gilchrist, regional hero and Republic of Strings guitarist Scott Law and bassist Samson Grisman.
In the early ’70s, David Grisman hired 20-yr-old Darol Anger to play fiddle in his new band, the David Grisman Quintet. 30-years later, Anger is now mentoring Grisman’s son, Sampson, who himself has already played with legends ranging from Del McCoury to Mike Marshall.

Dawes: Live @ Doug Fir
Dawes was a new discovery at last year’s SXSW for us here at the Basement and we have been looking forward to a headline tour to come through PDX! SoCal darlings are from a good pedigree with 2 members being brothers & sons of a member of Tower of Power. They have been making waves in the new Laurel Canyon scene with catchy hooks and a host of great songs on their debut album, North Hills, that was released on ATO records.

PDX Pop Now! Fundraiser this Saturday at Backspace

PDX Pop Now! is holding their annual fall fundraiser this Saturday, November 13th at all-ages venue Backspace in Old Town Portland. The show will feature the lo-fi dance punk of Guidance Counselor as well as Onuinu and Starparty. Come support Portland’s best arts oriented non-profit as the raise money for their ongoing school outreach programs.
PDX Pop Now!’s educational programming reaches out to young audiences by putting Portland’s creative capital front-and-center in gymnasiums, cafeterias and classrooms across the city. The idea is to approach young people as both supporters and collaborators by means of exposure and experience. For most kids it marks their first experience with live, local music-let alone, live music altogether. But, more importantly, many of these students will engage in the music community not just as listeners, show-goers and fans, but as creators as well. On November 30th, local acts the Angry Orts and Luck One will join PDX Pop Now! at Boise Eliot elementary school for the first of two school events in the 2010 – 2011 school year.
Tickets for the Backspace (115 NW 5th Ave) show are only $6-10 (sliding scale) and starts at 8 pm.
