MFNW 2011 – Rock Gallery: MusicfestNW Poster Mart

The annual MusicfestNW Poster Show is dead, kaput, muerto. But fear not. Rising from its ashes is the more consumer-friendly MusicfestNW Poster Mart, presented by EMP.

Held in the Jupiter Hotel’s courtyard (800 E Burnside St.), the MusicfestNW Poster Mart is open to everyone who wants to peruse the custom-made MFNW show posters and other original works, meet the artists who created them, slap down some sweet green scrilla and take home a poster.

This year, MFNW enlisted artists such as Guy Burwell (Portland), Studio Frontaal (Netherlands), John Vogl (Denver) and a slew of others who crafted meticulous pieces for MFNW’s shows.

The Poster Mart will be open Saturday, September 10th from noon to 10 pm, so if you see a MFNW show that changes your life, or think you might have a life-changing experience (you will, trust us), run down to the Poster Mart to commemorate (or, pre-emptively memorialize) that moment in time with a slick new piece of art.

MFNW 2011: Artist Spotlight – Richmond Fontaine

Edit

Local PDX’ers Richmond Fontaine will be releasing their new album The High Country this fall & we are excited to get a preview this year at MFNW. Due out September 20, The High Country is a conceptual recording—or, as they call it, a “song-novel concept album”—that takes full advantage of frontman Willy Vlautin’s gift for writing (sad) stories about fascinating (and sad) characters. Shockingly, the album has no songs about Vlautin’s other favorite topics: Reno, horses, drunk jockeys, and a drunk Reno jockey who rides a horse that has a gambling problem.

Richmond Fontaine will play the Mississippi Studios on Thursday, September 8th @ 11pm during MFNW.

These are the songs from the 7″ single for “The High Country”. It features two songs from the upcoming album and a bonus instrumental.

OPBmusic: Old Light

If there’s one thing that can be said about Old Light, it’s that they play with intention– a quality that shines through in our session with the Portland band. Yet, their story is one about an almost accidental band, one whose beginning was (like a lot of things in this town) brought about in part because of coffee.

As guitarist/singer Charlie Hester tells it, it was his gig slinging espresso that led to regular meetings with San Francisco transplant Garth Steel Klippert and the parade of musician friends he’d bring around for morning after gig wake-me-ups. Before long, the two were talking music and Klippert was passing a demo of some “autoharp songs” to Hester, who himself is a longtime member of The Parson Red Heads. It wasn’t long before Klippert got a call with Hester on the other end telling him, “I’m in your band. I booked us a show. When’s practice?” Such is the interesting past that led to Old Light’s debut The Dirty Future, out last October on Arena Rock.

Now a filled-out five-piece (Klippert and Hester joined by bassist Patrick Finn and dueling drummers Todd Roper and Scott DeMay), the band joined us for an amped up set of songs from their debut. They also talk about their seemingly fated formation, upcoming recording plans and the notion of “intergenerational radness.”

Old Light plays Pickathon this weekend, with sets Friday evening and Sunday afternoon, as well as Holocene August 10th, and a MusicFest NW date at Bunk Bar September 9th.
